Sarvodaya
The Sarvodaya Shramadana Movement (www.sarvodaya.org) started 47 years ago. Sarvodaya is Sanskrit for "Awakening of All" and Shramadana means to "donate effort". The Sarvodaya Shramadana Movement is the leading non-government organization in the country and has been in the forefront of providing humanitarian assistance in Tsunami affected areas of the country. Sarvodaya currently owns and operates 26 existing orphanages. Long term they plan to construct new permanent centres on land owned by Sarvodaya and its regional offices.
Sarvodaya has the experience, contacts and organizational skills to take on the crucial task of maintaining and rehabilitating those orphaned by the Tsunami. The South Asian Tsunami has left thousands of children orphaned and displaced. These children have been left helpless and traumatized requiring immediate mental, emotional and physical support.
Light of Lanka aims to provide the financial support to Sarvodaya to enable the initial construction of the orphanage. Sarvodaya will provide existing land and the infrastructure to support, operate and maintain the orphanage all of which will be carefully overseen by Light of Lanka Foundation. These include initial concept designs and drawings of the facility through to overseeing the progress of construction and final completion. In the long term this will include various key programs focusing on education, health, mental and physical wellbeing and cultural projects.
Sarvodaya believes that at least 2000 Tsunami affected children will come up for care in orphanages within the next twelve months, with at least 500 needing such care within the next month. The children have been identified as the most vulnerable group impacted by the Tsunami. If not effectively managed they are exposed to the dangers of being exploited as servants in rich homes, trafficking overseas, sexual abuse, leverage to sustain livelihood of parents, relations and others and even recruited as child combatants. As result of the number of highly threatening circumstances, Light of Lanka, envisages the requirement of a comfortable homely environment, as even more imperative in breaking the cycle of poverty and exploitation.
